Today, November 20, marks World Children’s Day at the UN. We wish for every child to be raised in an environment of love and acceptance of others, to be educated in matters that will help the child contribute meaningfully to society. Unfortunately this is not so in the Palestinian Authority and in Gaza, despite them claiming that the Palestinian school curriculum does not contain incitement or racism.
Anti-Israel groups are using this day to focus on Israel’s imprisonment of minors. Minors under the age of 18 who are held in Israeli prisons are there because they have committed violent crimes ranging from stone throwing, rioting to first degree murder. Those imprisoned for stone throwing and rioting are generally behind bars for a short amount of time.
Anti-Israel groups are using the hashtag #NoWayToTreatAChild to call on Israel to free even the most violent offenders, including the murderer of the Fogel family in 2011 in which a child broke into a Jewish home and murdered 5 family members including a 2 month old baby, a 4 year old and an 11 year old.
Today, we are using this day to highlight the reason Palestinian children end up committing violent crimes and going to prison. They are encouraged throughout their upbringing. Their parents, their schools, their TV programs for children, the names of their town squares and public institutions all promote terror and martyrdom as heroic acts.
